We thought we would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. To this end, we boarded a bird cruise headed for Smith Island, a small, uninhabited dot out in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Surrounded by beds of bull kelp—you can read all about that here—it’s a hotspot of sea bird activity.

Several cormorants and gulls were lazing atop the concrete base of an old navigation marker.

Three bald eagles sped out from Whidbey Island (in the background) and frightened everyone away. Sometimes eagles can be real jerks.
