4/11: Bat o’ the Day

“What is it?”

“I don’t know. It’s pretty fast and flies around like a swallow.”

“That’s no swallow. Could it be a bat?”

”But it’s daylight.”

Sure enough, it was a bat. Bats don’t like daylight much but they are known to come out and hunt during the day. This one was having a grand time scooping up insects around the pond. They’re incredibly hard to photograph in flight. Small birds like kinglets frantically flit from perch to perch stopping for a millisecond or two. Bats are just as frantic, but they don’t perch. It was exhausting just to watch it!
